The \”heart symbol\” has been around for years, used to refer to the spiritual, emotional, moral, and intellectual core of humans. It\’s often depicted as \”red\” as this symbolizes blood (as it is the heart that pumps blood through the body) and strong emotions…and what emotion can possibly be stronger than that of true love?

Finding a true heart-shaped diamond is a rare event, but they do exist. For example, the most rare and famous of these is the \”Blue Heart\” (also called the Eugenie Blue) diamond. Many people consider it to be the best example of a blue diamond that the world has ever seen. The only diamond that can rival its fame is perhaps the Hope Diamond, but with the unique heart shape of the \”Blue Heart\”, it really stands out in the crowd. From the standpoint of pure elegance and simplicity, there are few diamonds that can hold a candle to the \”Blue Heart\”.

The \”Blue Heart\” is a 30.82 metric carat diamond. It is thought to be of either African or Indian origin. The original rough diamond was cut by Antanik Ekyanan of Neuilly, Paris in either 1909 or 1910. It\’s current dimensions are: 20mm x 19mm x 12mm.

The diamond wound up in the possession of an Argentinian woman named Mrs. Unzue, who had it set into a corsage. It was sold to Cartier in 1910. When it was sold to Van Cleef and Arpels in 1953 it was still in the corsage setting.

The next stop of this precious heart jewelry gem was an European family, who then sold it to a gentleman named Harry Winston. The year was 1959, and he placed this diamond into a ring, and subsequently sold it to Marjorie Merriweather Post. Marjorie Merriweather Post eventually donated it to the Smithsonian Institution located in Washington, D.C. It is here at the Smithsonian that this wonderful example of heart jewelry is currently on display. As a bit of nostalgic history and trivia, it\’s interesting to note that at one point the Blue Heart Diamond, the Hope Diamond, and the Heart of Eternity were all on display at the Smithsonian Institution.

If you are planning to design a new kitchen, you should know the recommended measurement that will give you the perfect cooking work space. This article gives you 10 tips on how to make your new kitchen the best place for the daily cooking task.

1. For efficiency, the work triangle (the space between the sink, refrigerator, and stove) should measure 26\’ or less with no single side longer than 9\’, or less than 4\’.

2. If your kitchen is larger than 150 sq. ft choose at least 16 1/2\’ of countertop, 15 1/2\’ of wall cabinets, and 16\’ of base cabinets. For smaller kitchens buy 11\’ of countertop, 12\’ of wall cabinets, and 13\’ of base cabinets.

3. For convenience, plan work aisles to be at least 42\” wide for one cook, and at least 48\” wide in multi-cook kitchens.

4. Have a least 24\” of counter space on one side of the sink and 18\” on the other side.

5. Have at least 15\” of counter space on besides the refrigerator (on the handle side) for unloading groceries. If you have a side-by-side refrigerator have the space on both sides. If it is not possible, have a landing space across from the refrigerator (with a 48\” maximum distance).

6. To make it easy to clean up, the dishwasher should not be more than 36\” of the edge of the sink. Leave minimum 21\” of standing room next to it.

7. Provide at least 15\” counter space near ovens and microwaves. The space should be minimum 16\” deep.

8. For optimum clearance, no entry, appliance, or cabinet doors should interfere with another.

9. The prevent repetitive-motion injury make the work counters have different height. For chopping and seated-use access have them between 28 and 36\” off the floor, and for more general tasks make then between 36 and 46\”. This is standard measures. Taller cooks may need higher counters.

10. The clearance between the cook top and a cabinet unit must be minimum 24\” if the surface is fireproof and 30\” if it isn\’t.

Designing a kitchen is as much a science as it is an art. Knowing the recommended measurements to use when planning the project can make all the difference in the final outcome. And why not do it right the first time. It is not cheap to make the changes later.
