19 - Attic Organization - Tips and Advice
from:When we think of cleaning the house, most of us do not consider what a cluttered mess our attics might be. Although it may seem like an impossible job at times, there are some steps you can take to make cleaning and organizing your attic easier. The following paragraphs will discuss cleaning out the attic, as well as provide some tips and advice on how to organize your attic while making the job less dreadful.
The attic tends to be the space in our houses where we tend to store all the things we are not using at the time. Some of these items sit in our attics for years and years without ever being thought of. Sometimes we store things in the item simply because we do not want to throw it away at the time. Because we tend to store unnecessary things in our attics, they need to be cleaned and organized from time to time.
The first step to take when cleaning out your attic is to go through all of your boxes of old paperwork. This may be time consuming, and you may be tempted to skip boxes, but it is important to go through everything. You can make the process of determining what is important, by using this as a time to take a stroll down memory lane. Throw everything that is not important. Sometime it is hard to get rid of things like old homework papers and all your old Valentine's Day cards, but doing so will help you cut down on clutter. If you have saved old bills or credit card statements, or anything that displays your full name, you should first shred it, then dispose of it.
The next step for cleaning your attic is to go through any clothes you may have stored in your attic. If you have not used the clothes in over a decade, it is safe to get rid of them. Maybe you stored them thinking you would lose weight and fit into them again. If you still do not fit in these clothes after 10 years, chances are you are not going to ever again. Donate all of you older stored clothing to your local second hand store or church.
Finally, once you have went through all your boxes and storage containers, you need to organize the things boxes or crates you have decided to keep. Everything should be able to be down-sized into smaller, stackable totes. You should use labels, and label what is stored in each tote. This helps you to be able to locate things in the future, without making a mess. Labeling your totes prevents you from having to go through each individual tote to find whatever you may be looking for.
