Garage Organizers

from:

Garages are notorious for becoming a mass clutter of shoes, coats, hats, trash, toys, tools, and other junk. Kids are especially guilty of dropping their shoes and hats as they enter the house through the garage. Not only are these items unsightly, they present a safety hazard for people walking through the garage and stumbling or falling over disorganized items.

If you find that your garage has become a safety hazard, it’s time to think about organizing the mess. In addition to the garage being a junk collection site, it’s hard to find those shoes and hats when you need them.

Before you decide that your garage is too far out of control, consider a home improvement project that takes very little money and just a little time. You can turn that pile of clutter into an organized collection of things that can be easily sorted, identified, and used.

First, you need to find a space that is convenient to the entrance of the garage for your project. Creating a place to collect items from children will be simple. Once you know how much space you have to work with, you can visit your local home improvement store, Wal-Mart, Target, or similar stores to check out potential storage units.

Wooden ‘cubby boxes’ come in all shapes, colors, and sizes. Think about how you plan to use a new cubby organizer and evaluate the options. If your children are always dropping shoes on the floor, then smaller cubbies where they can store shoes when they enter the garage are a good option. If they’re dropping coats and scarves, it’s a good idea to also purchase hooks to install on the walls above the cubbies. Cloth or plastic hanging shoe organizers are perfect to hang on garage walls where scarves and mittens can be stored.

Color coding the cubbies and hooks for the children makes it easier and more fun for them to organize their things. Susie gets a pink cubby and hook, while Jeremy prefers brown. Match the color to the child’s personality and they’re more likely to use the organizing tools.

Check out a larger box or basket that can be kept beside the stairs of the garage or somewhere near the entryway. Use this box as a collection point for soccer balls, toys, and other items that are frequently used. You may need a separate box for children and one for adults to keep toys and other items separate.

Think creatively about the use of your garage and don’t assume everything has to be dumped into one big, messy pile. Find simple, inexpensive organizing units that can be used in convenient locations of the garage. You’ll find that children quickly adapt to this new idea of organization and it can be carried throughout the house in many ways.
