Tools for Home Improvement

from:

Depending on the scope of your home improvement projects, the tools you will need to complete them could be the most expensive part of the project. While you don’t have to have an entire workshop to complete simple projects, there are basic tools you will need and several you may need, including hammers, drills, screwdrivers, wrenches, and saws. However, there are many other tools you may need for specialty jobs and if you are on a budget, you might consider more economical ways of obtaining those tools than buying them new. Unless you plan to be using the tools you will need several times, consider borrowing or renting them. If you do find that you need to purchase tools, look for used tools.

Pawn Shops Sell Used Tools

Pawn shops do a booming business in times of economic turmoil. People who need extra money or even just money to make ends meet often sell their possessions or obtain short term loans on them. If they sell them outright, the items are offered for sale to the public; if they obtain loans on them but do not pick them up, after a period of time, those items are offered for sale to the public as well.

Reputable pawn shops are picky about the items they take in. They must assume that they will get stuck with any item they make a loan on and so all items have to be in good condition and have resale value. Because of this, you can get the tools you need at a fraction of the cost of new ones. The selection will vary by store, of course, but typically, you can find small tools, such as hammers, screwdrivers, and drills, as well as larger tools, such as air compressors and lawn mowers and edgers.

Check to see if your community has an active freecycle community. Freecycle.org has many active local communities throughout the United States with the idea being to keep as much refuse out of landfills as possible. Many times, you can get extremely useful items from other members of the freecycle community and it also offers you the opportunity to save your extras from ending up in the landfill as well.

Bartering is Back!

Bartering hasn’t been talked about much in recent years but it is rapidly becoming a cost effective way to do business and to take care of business. There are several websites that host bartering boards and many communities have become active in bartering as well. Remember, to participate in bartering, you need to have something of value to offer but value is also in the eye of the one who needs the item. People all across the United States are bartering for everything from dental work to transportation and even for home renovation projects. So before you spend money you can’t afford to, check to see if you may be able to barter.
